SRW Design

Design of Geogrid reinforced segmental retaining walls (SRW’s)

Segmental retaining walls (SRW’s) utilizing modular concrete block and geogrid reinforcement are becoming common site development tools for the site civil engineer.  These walls are aesthetically pleasing and are versatile, attractive and lower cost than conventional retaining walls.Peachtree Hills

REDI specializes in the analysis and design of these structures.  We are familiar with many types of unique block systems in use across the country today, and with the many reinforcement geogrid products.

The most common application for these walls is in commercial development projects.  For this application REDI typically uses the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA, 1993) design procedure, which is becoming the design standard for most commercial projects.  Site specific project specification requirements are followed when required by construction documents.

Alternative design procedure commonly used for Public sector construction is the FHWA/AASHTO design procedures.  This approach is commonly required on state, city, county and other municipal construction.

REDI finished product for these structures is a complete package with design drawings suitable for use in construction, along with a calculations submittal.  The drawings spell out the geogrid types, locations, elevations and appropriate lengths for use along the wall, and show an elevation view depicting the block and geogrid layout.

SRW design procedures available for use include:

·       NCMA design procedures

·       AASHTO/NHI design procedures

·       Global stability calculations
